Questions and answers

What is the metronome marking for andante?

There is no single one. Wikipedia's list of common tempo markings gives Andante 56 to 108 beats a minute, calls such figures very rough approximations for 4/4, and adds that a word alone never fixes a metronome mark. A figure printed in the score decides.

How wide is the andante metronome speed range?

Wider than any other two-figure range in that list: 52 beats a minute lie between its ends, where Allegro has 36. One andante can be nearly twice as fast as another. Adagietto, 46 to 80, overlaps the slow end, and Moderato takes over at 108.

Is andantino faster than andante?

Usually. The list has Andantino as slightly quicker than andante yet under moderato, 80 to 108, and notes that some take it to mean slightly slower instead. Andante moderato has the same 80 to 108. Both lie in the upper part of this page's range.

What does andante con moto mean on a metronome?

Con moto is Italian for with movement, and the Tempo article's example of it is Andante con moto; it prints no figure for the pair. One score does: Wikipedia's article on Beethoven's Fifth Symphony shows the second movement, in 3/8, at eighth note = 92.

Why can't I hear the metronome?

On a phone, suspect the ring switch, then a volume at the bottom of its slider, then Bluetooth headphones playing the click out of earshot. The beat needs no sound to be seen: the pad's two dots keep trading places at the tempo.
