How it works

Questions and answers
What is the metronome setting for adagio?
Somewhere from 44 to 66 beats a minute, if Wikipedia's list of common tempo markings is the guide. It warns that such figures vary widely between composers and works. Where the music prints a mark, follow that.
Is 72 an adagio metronome speed?
Not in this list, where Adagio stops at 66. Seventy-two falls to Adagietto, slightly faster than adagio, at 46 to 80, and to Andante. Below, Largo starts four beats under Adagio, at 40, and ends with it; Adagissimo shares Grave's 24 to 40.
What is an adagio metronome marking in a real score?
One symphony has two. The table of movements in Wikipedia's article on Beethoven's Ninth Symphony gives Adagio molto e cantabile, in 4/4, as quarter note = 60 and the finale's Adagio ma non troppo, ma divoto, in 3/2, as half note = 60.
Why is a slow movement called an adagio?
Movements often take their marking as a name. The Tempo article says composers or publishers name them this way and picks an Adagio, the second movement of a string quartet, as its example. So an adagio can be a piece as well as a speed.
Why can't I hear the metronome?
Give a slow click a moment: at 57 the second one takes over a second to arrive. Still silent? Look at the phone's ring switch, its volume and its Bluetooth connections. The pad's two dots mark each beat regardless.
