How it works
A BPM metronome, or beats per minute metronome, clicks as many times a minute as its number says: once a second at 60, twice at 120. This one takes any whole tempo from 1 to 1000.

Questions and answers
What is a metronome?
A device that sounds a click at an even interval you set. A wind-up one swings a weighted pendulum and usually runs from 40 to 208 beats a minute, says Wikipedia's metronome article. A metronome program like this one is not held to that scale.
Are metronome beats quarter notes?
In 4/4 they are. The beat is typically the note that the bottom number of the time signature names, says Wikipedia's article on tempo. Every click on this page sounds the same, so it can stand for whichever note you count.
How do you practise using a metronome?
Pick a tempo below the one you are aiming for, play in time with the click, then raise the number in small steps until you reach it. Wikipedia's metronome article describes musicians working up to a tempo this way.
Is an online metronome accurate?
This metronome website keeps time on your device's sound clock, not on a page timer. Every metronome click gets its own moment on that clock, so a busy phone can drop one click without moving the ones after it.
Why can't I hear the metronome?
Look at three things: the ring switch on the side of a phone, the volume, and whether sound is going to Bluetooth headphones. The dots on the pad keep time with no sound at all, so you can follow them by eye meanwhile.
