Questions and answers
What metronome speed is allegro?
Between 120 and 156 beats a minute, going by Wikipedia's list of common tempo markings. The list is frank about it: the numbers are very rough approximations for 4/4 and vary widely with the composer and the work.
Is allegro faster than vivace or presto?
No, both are quicker. The list runs Vivace from 156 to 176 and Presto from 168 to 200, so Allegro hands over to Vivace at 156. Molto allegro and Allegro vivace share its livelier upper part: 124 to 156.
What does allegro mean in music?
Cheerful, in Italian. The Tempo article explains that allegro and presto both call for speed, presto more of it, but only allegro also connotes joy. Allegro ma non troppo, its example of a qualifier, means fast, but not too much.
What is the metronome mark for allegro in a score?
Whatever it prints. The Mutopia Project's edition of Chopin's Etude Op. 10 No. 2 has Allegro, quarter note = 144, inside the range. Wikipedia shows the Allegro finale of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony at half note = 84: by our sum 168 quarter notes, above it.
Why can't I hear the metronome?
Look at the ring switch on a phone first, then the volume, then whether the click is going to a Bluetooth speaker or headphones. With no sound at all the pad's two dots still swap on every beat.
