Questions and answers

What is moderato on a metronome?

A setting from 108 to 120 beats a minute, by Wikipedia's list of common tempo markings. The list hedges its numbers: they assume 4/4, they shift from composer to composer, and no word alone fixes a metronome mark.

Where does the moderato metronome range start and stop?

It starts where three slower markings stop: the list ends Andante, Andantino and Andante moderato at 108. It stops at 120, where Allegro begins. Allegretto, from 112, and Allegro moderato, from 116, sit inside it and share that last number.

What does moderato mean after another tempo word?

It tempers the first word and stops meaning 108 to 120. In the list Andante moderato lies between andante and moderato, at 80 to 108; Allegro moderato is just short of allegro, at 116 to 120; Marcia moderato, moderately and march-like, is 66 to 80.

Is andante moderato always 80 to 108 on a metronome?

No. The table of movements in Wikipedia's article on Beethoven's Ninth Symphony gives the Andante moderato of the slow movement, in 3/4, as quarter note = 63. That is well under the list's 80: the kind of gap its warning is about.

Why can't I hear the metronome?

On a phone, try the ring switch first, then the volume, then any Bluetooth headphones that may have taken the click. Sound or none, the two dots on the pad swap over on every beat.
