How this list was compiled: All 31 lines and notes were written for this page, in five groups. Letters in the lines are ordinary English words, checked against the ENABLE word list (https://norvig.com/ngrams/enable1.txt, fetched 2026-09-24); tsp, the day names, the contraction don't, the letters Q, B and x, and the reserved example domain help@example.com were allowed. The sums in the lines were checked (4.99 + 12.50 = 17.49, 3 x 6.25 = 18.75, 4 x 6 = 24, 9 - 3 = 6), and no line's text is on any other list of this site. US and UK boards differ
Typing with symbols depends on the board. A US board puts @ on Shift and 2 and " on Shift and the apostrophe key. A UK board swaps those two, puts £ on Shift and 3, and gives # a key of its own beside Enter. The note for each line, listed under the tool, says which key to press.
Shift with the other hand
Every symbol above a digit needs Shift. Hold it with the hand that is not typing the key: the right Shift for ! @ # $ %, the left one for & * ( ). With No timer, a run ends when the lines run out or when you press Finish.
Say a price to yourself as you type it, one key at a time: four, point, nine, nine.
Choose one group and 30 s for symbol typing practice against your own best, which this browser keeps for each length.
Questions and answers
Why do I get " when I press @?
Your computer is set to a UK layout and the keyboard is a US one, or the other way round. The two layouts swap @ and ". Change the keyboard layout or input language in your system settings to match the keys.
Does a symbol count as a word?
Speed counts characters, not words. Every correct character, spaces included, adds to the total, and five characters make one word. A line full of symbols weighs the same as a line of letters of the same length.
Which finger types each number key?
Courses differ. One common way gives 1 and 2 to the left little finger, 3 to the ring, 4 to the middle, and 5 and 6 to the left index; others give 6 to the right hand. Pick one way and keep it.
