How it works
This is the hardest typing test on the site: nine passages written to slow you down. Three are built from long words, three from tricky spellings, and three from symbols, digits and capitals in odd places. A finished passage rolls into the next.

Three kinds of hard
Long words test stamina: Chemistry Homework holds dichlorodifluoromethane, 23 letters with no place to rest. Tricky spellings test memory: Silent Letters has knight, gnawed, psalm and subpoena. Symbols test reach: Order Form and Brackets and Marks send both little fingers to Shift and the far corners of the keyboard.
How to read your score
Pick 30 seconds, 1 minute or 2 minutes. Expect a lower WPM than on the typing speed test. Compare a result here only with another result here, and watch accuracy before speed.
- For long words typing practice, say the word in syllables as you type it: spec-tro-pho-to-met-ri-cal-ly.
- On Capitals in Odd Places, hold Shift with the hand that is not typing the letter.
Questions and answers
Is this really the hardest typing test?
It is the hardest on this site, by design. Nobody keeps a record of the hardest test anywhere, so the page makes no wider claim. If a passage feels easy, move to the Symbols and mixed case set.
Are the long words real?
Yes. Every word in the long word and tricky spelling passages was checked against a published English word list. Otorhinolaryngologists, electroencephalographer and carboxymethylcellulose are all in it. The identifiers and order numbers in the symbol passages are made up.
Why is the longest word only 23 letters?
The typing tool accepts words of up to 30 characters, and the passages were kept to words that read naturally in a sentence. Longer curiosities, such as 45-letter place names, cannot be set as a single word here.
