Typing exercises for adults, by kind of text

The Passage menu lists all 40 in five sets of eight: emails; messages and notes; addresses, dates, times and amounts; lists and forms; letters and work notes. The page opens on Reply to a meeting request, and every text is printed in full under the tool.

What these texts add to plain prose

An email address needs @, a time the colon, a date the slash, a price the dollar sign and the point. With No timer a run ends on the last character or on Finish. Under More options you can set a limit of 60 s, 180 s or 300 s, for typing speed practice for adults against a clock.

  • For keyboard practice for adults who fill in forms, take A contact form: every entry is a label, a colon and an answer.
  • The addresses set is keyboarding practice for adults at its densest: it has the most capitals and digits for its length.

Questions and answers

Is this touch typing practice for adults who still look at the keys?

It suits someone who already knows where the keys are. If you still hunt for them, begin with the touch typing lessons, which teach two keys at a time with no clock, then come back for the emails and forms.

Can I print a text to practise away from the screen?

Yes. Finish the text you want and press Print sheet under your result. The sheet has the text in large type, a name and date line and a table for scores; your browser can save it as a PDF.

Why do the dates come in two orders?

Because forms ask for both. One text gives the same day as 3 March 2025, March 3, 2025 and 03/03/2025, so you type the day first, the month first and the all-digit form with slashes.

How this list was compiled: All 40 texts were written for this page; none is taken from a real email, letter, form or record. Every person, street, town, firm, order and reference number in them is made up. The email and web addresses use example.com and example.org, which are reserved for examples (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Example.com, citing RFC 2606; read 2026-10-09), so they reach nobody. The phone numbers are in the range 555-0100 to 555-0199, which the North American Numbering Plan keeps for fictitious numbers (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fictitious_telephone_number, read 2026-10-09). Words and keystrokes were counted, a keystroke being one character, spaces included; the three sums in the texts were checked, and every phone number and email address is in a reserved range. Dates are written in more than one order on purpose, day first and month first, because both are met in forms. Licence: The texts, their names and the counts are original to this site.
