How it works

These touch typing lessons teach the letter keys in 16 steps, two new keys a lesson, one for each hand. As keyboard typing lessons go they are short: 40 to 65 words each, using only keys already taught.

Typing lesson one, then the next

1. Click the box and type the text. Lesson 1 is F and J, the two keys with raised marks. 2. The run ends with the text and shows words per minute and accuracy. 3. Under More options, open Passage and pick the next lesson, or skip ahead.

From beginning typing lessons to full keyboard typing practice

Lessons 1 to 5 are key patterns on the home row. Lessons 6 to 10 add the top row in real words. Lessons 11 to 15 add the bottom row, the comma, the period and both Shift keys. Lesson 16 is five sentences with every letter.

  • In lessons 1 to 14 the two new keys belong to the same finger of each hand.
  • For a capital, the other hand holds Shift: the right Shift for A, the left Shift for J.

Questions and answers

Are these typing lessons for adults?

Yes. The words are plain grown-up vocabulary, such as quarter, museum and oxygen, and nothing is marked against an age or a grade. For children, typing for kids covers the same three rows in four stages.

Is there a typing lessons PDF?

Your browser makes one. Finish the lesson you want, press Print sheet under your result and choose Save as PDF. As printable typing lessons, each sheet has the text in large type, a name and date line, and a score table.

Is this keyboard practice for beginners?

Yes. Lesson 1 assumes nothing: two keys, F and J, one under each index finger. These are QWERTY typing lessons, so the key order and the finger for each key follow the United States layout.

Do these work as senior typing lessons?

Yes. No clock runs, no account is needed and the first lesson uses two keys only. Any lesson can be typed again as often as you like before you move to the next one.

How do the lessons teach typing without looking?

Eight fingers rest on A S D F and J K L ;, and the index fingers find F and J by their raised marks. Every other key is a reach from that row and back, so each lesson adds one reach a hand.

Lesson 16: every letter 1

  • Lesson 16: every letter with capitals Dawn broke over the quiet valley. A fox jumped the low wall by the farm gate. Six men packed boxes of frozen plums and quince jam. The kitchen smelled of bread, ginger and smoke. We drove home very slowly, lazy and happy, under a sky full of stars.

How this list was compiled: All 16 lesson texts were written for this page; none is taken from a typing course or book. Lessons 1 to 5 are key patterns on the home row. Each of lessons 6 to 15 opens with four patterns of its two new keys and goes on in real words, and lesson 16 is five sentences that use all 26 letters. Every text was checked on 2026-10-02: a lesson holds only keys taught in it or before it; in lessons 6 to 15 every word holds one of the lesson's two new keys, and no word is used in two of those lessons (lesson 16 uses some of their words again); and every word is in the ENABLE word list, https://norvig.com/ngrams/enable1.txt (fetched 2026-10-02), except the one-letter word a and seven names in lesson 15, Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Sunday, April, June and July, which that list does not hold and which were allowed. The home keys A S D F and J K L ; and the raised marks on F and J: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Touch_typing (read 2026-10-02). The finger for each key, and which Shift key goes with which letter: the United States layout file of the free KTouch typing tutor, https://invent.kde.org/education/ktouch/-/raw/master/data/keyboardlayouts/us.xml (read 2026-10-02), which agrees letter for letter with this site's type the alphabet list. In each of lessons 1 to 14 the two new keys belong to the same finger of the left hand and the right hand. Licence: The lesson texts, their order and their names are original to this site. The ENABLE word list is in the public domain (its release statement is quoted at http://wordlist.aspell.net/scowl_v1-readme/) and was used only to check spelling. KTouch is free software; only the finger for each key was read from its layout file.
