How this list was compiled: 132 English words that use only the 11 right-hand letters of a QWERTY keyboard (Y U I O P, H J K L, N M), plus 12 drill lines for single fingers and rows. Words: chosen from the ENABLE word list, https://norvig.com/ngrams/enable1.txt (172,820 words, fetched 2026-09-19). Each one is in that list and uses right-hand letters only. Rude words, insults, drug slang and American-only spellings were left out. Hand, row and finger for each letter come from this site's type the alphabet list; the home keys J K L ; and the finger chart were checked against https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Touch_typing, and the remark that many more words can be spelled with the left hand than with the right against https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QWERTY, both on 2026-09-19. The F G H J hand position for typing with one hand is from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One-hand_typing, read 2026-09-19. The groups are tagged from the map. The notes are short on purpose. The notes give the finger that carries half the letters or more, the same-finger jumps, the double letters and the longest roll; a word with none of these, and no meaning worth giving, has no note. The word meanings and the drill notes were written for this page, and the meaning of hypolimnion was checked against https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypolimnion on 2026-09-19. A same-finger jump is two different letters in a row typed by one finger. A roll is three or more letters in a row, each typed by the finger next to the last, in one direction: inward runs from the little finger towards the index, outward the other way. Counts from ENABLE, on 2026-09-19: 451 words can be typed with the right hand alone and 3,404 with the left hand alone; the longest right-hand word is hypolimnion at 11 letters, none has 10 and six have 9; 26 use the index finger alone, the longest being muumuu at 6 letters; only hm, mm and hmm have no top-row letter; 228 of the 426 right-hand words of three letters or more (54 percent) contain a same-finger jump. Other word lists give other counts. The 12 items in the group Finger drills are letter patterns, not words, and none of them is in ENABLE. Each pattern is written out four times with spaces between, so that it types as one practice line. Licence: ENABLE word list: public domain (its release statement is quoted at http://wordlist.aspell.net/scowl_v1-readme/, read 2026-09-19). The selection, the groups, the finger notes, the meanings and the drill patterns are own work.

How it works

Right hand typing practice is harder to fill than it sounds: the right side of a QWERTY keyboard has 11 letters, with only I, O and U for vowels. Here are 132 words that manage it, from hi to hypolimnion, and 12 finger drills.

Read the full guide

Eleven letters, six of them on one finger

The right hand owns 11 letters to the left hand's 15. Six belong to the index finger: Y, U, H, J, N and M. The middle finger has I and K, the ring finger O and L, the little finger only P. The ENABLE word list has 451 right-hand words, and 228 of the 426 with three letters or more hold a same-finger jump, most often U to M or O to L.

One hand, every stroke

This is typing practice, right hand only: keep both hands in position and let the right type every stroke of million or pumpkin. A run starts on Everything, drill lines included; Practise holds it to one length, to Double letters, or to Little finger: every word has a P. With No timer it stops at the end of the text or on Finish. Pick 30 s or 60 s and it is a right hand typing test.

  • Begin with lip, hop and pin: three letters, three fingers. Then mum: one finger throughout.
  • The index finger alone types 26 ENABLE words, muumuu the longest; 11 are here under Index finger alone: Y U H J N M. Warm up with jyj and jnj, then try hymn.
  • lollipop gives the ring finger five of its eight strokes. Drill lol first, then plink: little, ring, middle, index, then back to the middle finger for K.

Questions and answers

What is the longest word typed with the right hand only?

In the ENABLE word list it is hypolimnion, 11 letters, the dense bottom layer of a lake. No right-hand word has 10 letters and six have nine, polyphony and nonillion among them.

Can I use this as a one hand typing test?

Only on the right hand's own letters. Every word uses those 11 keys, so one hand can type a whole run, thumb on the space bar, and 30 s or 60 s gives a score. Ordinary text across the whole keyboard with one hand is a different skill with its own hand position, and this page does not offer it.

Why are there so few right-hand words?

The vowels are on the other side. A and E belong to the left hand, and so do T, S and R, which leaves I, O, U and Y to build on. ENABLE has 3,404 left-hand words, more than seven times as many. Compare left hand typing practice.
