How this list was compiled: 140 English words that use only the 15 left-hand keys of a QWERTY keyboard (Q W E R T, A S D F G, Z X C V B), plus 10 drill lines for single fingers and rows. Words: picked from the ENABLE word list, https://norvig.com/ngrams/enable1.txt (172,820 words, fetched 2026-09-19); every word is in that list, uses left-hand letters only and has at least one letter off the home row. Rude words were removed. Hand, row and finger for each letter: read from this site's type the alphabet list, which follows the standard touch typing chart; the layout and home keys were checked against https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QWERTY and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Touch_typing on 2026-09-19. The F G H J position for typing with one hand is from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One-hand_typing, read 2026-09-19. The groups are tagged from the map. The notes are short on purpose. The notes give the finger that carries half the letters or more, the same-finger jumps, the double letters, the longest roll, and the reaches to Q, Z and the bottom row; a word with none of these has no note. The drill notes were written for this page. A same-finger jump is two different letters in a row typed by one finger. A roll is three or more letters in a row that step to the neighbouring finger in one direction: inward runs from the little finger towards the index, outward the other way. The resting keys are A, S, D and F. Counts from ENABLE, on 2026-09-19: 3,404 words can be typed with the left hand alone and 451 with the right hand alone; 42 of the left-hand words stay on the home row; the longest left-hand word is sweaterdresses at 14 letters, no left-hand word has 13 letters, and 19 have 12 letters, stewardesses among them; the longest right-hand word is hypolimnion at 11 letters; 54.4 percent of the left-hand words of three or more letters hold at least one same-finger jump, and the most common jump is E to D (764 times, in 731 words), then D to E (404 times, in 394 words). Other word lists give other counts. The 10 items in the group Finger drills are letter patterns, not words, and none of them is in ENABLE. Each pattern is written out four times with spaces between, so that it types as one practice line. The statement that E, T and A are the three most frequent letters in English is from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QWERTY, read 2026-09-19. Licence: ENABLE word list: public domain (its release statement is quoted at http://wordlist.aspell.net/scowl_v1-readme/, read 2026-09-19). The selection, the groups, the finger notes and the drill patterns are own work.
How it works
Left hand typing practice uses words that never cross to the right side of a QWERTY keyboard. There are 140 of them here, from tea to sweaterdresses, plus 10 finger drills. The list under the tool marks the same-finger jumps, double letters and rolls, word by word.
Read the full guide
Fifteen keys, four fingers
On QWERTY the left hand owns 15 letters and the right hand 11. The index finger takes six of them, R, T, F, G, V and B, and each other finger takes three. E, T and A, the three most frequent letters in English, all sit on this side. The ENABLE word list holds 3,404 left-hand words against 451 for the right hand.
How a run works
Keep both hands in position and let the left make every stroke. A run starts on Everything, the 140 words with the drill lines among them. The Practise menu cuts it down to one length or one kind of trouble, such as Same-finger jumps. exceeded shows the trouble: the middle finger types seven of its eight letters. No timer runs to the end of the text, or until you press Finish. Pick 30 s or 60 s and it becomes a left hand typing test.
Start with are, sea and tea: three letters, three fingers, nothing used twice. Then add was, where W and S share the ring finger.
In ENABLE, 54 percent of left-hand words of three letters or more hold a same-finger jump, most often E to D. Feel it in seed and edge.
Warm up on Finger drills, letter patterns in the Practise menu: qaz, wsx and edc take one column per finger. abracadabra hands the little finger five of its 11 letters.
Questions and answers
Is stewardesses the longest word typed with the left hand?
Not in the list used here. The ENABLE word list holds 19 left-hand words of 12 letters, stewardesses and aftereffects among them, none of 13, and one of 14: sweaterdresses.
Is this left handed typing practice for left-handed people?
It trains the left hand, whichever hand you write with. Touch typing gives each hand its own keys, and on QWERTY the left gets 15 of the 26 letters. If you are left-handed and want ordinary two-hand text, take the typing speed test or choose from the typing practice paragraphs.
Why is my WPM lower on left-hand words?
On ordinary text the hands take turns, and while one types the other gets ready. Here one hand makes every stroke, and a same-finger jump such as C to E in race cannot be overlapped at all. Compare left-hand runs only with each other, not with a two-hand score.
