How this list was compiled: All 44 lines were put together for this page: 32 lines of terms and 12 expressions. Every one of the 126 terms is used in the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (National Governors Association Center for Best Practices and Council of Chief State School Officers, released 2010; PDF at https://learning.ccsso.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Math_Standards1.pdf, read 2026-10-09), whose text runs from kindergarten to high school, and is in the ENABLE word list, https://norvig.com/ngrams/enable1.txt (read 2026-10-09); both were checked. The standards are named only as the place the terms were taken from: the page gives no definitions and teaches no mathematics. Every expression was worked with exact fractions, and each is true as printed. Which key carries a sign, and whether it needs Shift, follows the United States layout file of the free KTouch typing tutor, https://invent.kde.org/education/ktouch/-/raw/master/data/keyboardlayouts/us.xml (read 2026-10-09): + on the = key, * on 8, ( on 9, ) on 0, % on 5, ^ on 6, < on the comma and > on the full stop all take Shift; the hyphen used as minus, the equals sign and the slash do not. Other layouts can differ. Licence: The lines, the choice of terms, the expressions and the notes are original to this site. The ENABLE word list is in the public domain (release statement quoted at http://wordlist.aspell.net/scowl_v1-readme/). Single words of mathematics are not works; nothing else is taken from the standards.

How it works

Math typing practice in two parts: 32 lines of terms, from sum to magnitude, and 12 expressions with their signs, such as 5 * (2 + 6) = 40. Every expression is true as printed; you work nothing out.

Typing math: words and signs

The page opens on sum difference product quotient; after it the lines come mixed. Under More options, Practise keeps you on one set: operations, fractions and decimals, geometry, algebra, or expressions. Terms such as circumference and perpendicular are long and seldom typed, so they get lines of their own.

  • A keyboard has no times or divide sign: * and / stand in, as in 12 * 8 = 96.
  • Type the space on each side of a sign, as the lines do. A space is a character like any other.

Questions and answers

How do you type math symbols on a keyboard?

On a United States keyboard, hold Shift for plus (the equals key), the star (8), brackets (9 and 0), percent (5), the caret (6) and < and > (comma and full stop). Minus, equals and the slash need no Shift.

Where do the math terms come from?

All 126 are used in the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, the United States school standards released in 2010, which run from kindergarten to high school. The page gives no definitions: it is typing practice, not a glossary.

Is the math typing practice timed?

Not at first. With No timer a run ends with the lines or when you press Finish. Under More options, 30 s or 60 s adds a clock, and the result gives words per minute and accuracy.
