How this list was compiled: 151 English words typed on the ten letters of the QWERTY top row alone (Q W E R T Y U I O P), 44 words that use the top and middle rows and no bottom-row letter, and 12 drill lines. The words were picked from the ENABLE word list, https://norvig.com/ngrams/enable1.txt (172,820 words, read 2026-10-02), which is in the public domain; that list holds 571 top-row words of three letters or more, and rude, obscure and unkind ones were left out, with every word that is already an item of another typing list on this site. Each word is in the list, and the rows its letters are on were checked. The row and hand of each letter are this site's own key map for touch typing on QWERTY, which agrees key for key with the United States layout file of the free KTouch typing tutor, https://invent.kde.org/education/ktouch/-/raw/master/data/keyboardlayouts/us.xml (read 2026-10-02); the home keys and the names of the top, middle and bottom rows were checked against https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Touch_typing on 2026-10-02. The groups and the notes beside the words (one hand, hands in turn, double letters, one finger for two keys) were set by rule; the notes beside the drills were written for this page. How it works
Top and middle row keyboard practice with no bottom-row letter anywhere: 151 words typed on Q W E R T Y U I O P alone, 44 that add the middle row, and 12 drill lines.
Read the full guide
Ten letters, four vowels
The top row holds E, U, I and O, four of the five vowels, so it spells a great deal: the ENABLE word list has 571 top row words of three letters or more. The longest have ten letters, typewriter, proprietor and repertoire among them.
Everything, or one group
The page opens on Everything: drill lines and words shuffled together. Under More options, Practise narrows it. Top and middle rows together gives words such as keystroke. For typing top row keyboard practice one finger at a time, pick Reaches up from the middle row: frfr is F, then R above it.
teeter and wetter never use the right hand: Q, W, E, R and T all belong to the left.
Questions and answers
What is the longest word on the top row of a keyboard?
In the ENABLE word list of 172,820 entries, six words of ten letters share first place: typewriter, proprietor, repertoire, perpetuity, peppertree and prerequire. The first five are on this page.
Which fingers type the top row?
The eight that rest on the middle row, each reaching up. Little fingers take Q and P, ring fingers W and O, middle fingers E and I. Each index finger has two keys: R and T on the left, U and Y on the right.
Can the practice be timed?
Yes. Under More options, pick 30 s or 60 s in place of No timer. With no timer a run ends with the text or when you press Finish. The result gives WPM and accuracy.
