How it works
This typing practice games page has one game, Falling Words, with nine levels. Pick a level and a speed, then press Start. Words drop from the top of the screen. Type a word to clear it before it lands. Level 1 stays on the home row. Level 9 has eight-letter words such as dinosaur. It is free, and there is no sign-up.

How Falling Words works
Choose a level in the Level menu and a speed under Speed, then press Start. A run is 25 words, picked at random from that level's list. Press the first letter of a word and the game locks on to the lowest word that starts with it. Type the rest and the word clears on its last letter, with no Enter key and no space. A wrong key does nothing to the word, but it counts against your accuracy. A word that lands costs one of three lives. At the end you see words cleared, accuracy and your longest streak. Gentle is the speed to start on. Fast is for older players who like speed typing games.
Why the levels follow the keyboard rows
Touch typing starts from the home row. The left hand rests on A S D F and the right hand on J K L and the semicolon key. Level 1 uses only home row letters, in words such as salad, flask and glass. Levels 2 and 3 add the top row and never use the bottom row. Every word in Levels 4 and 5 has a bottom row letter, as in zoom and crab. Levels 6 to 9 go by length: five, six, seven and eight letters. That is the idea behind typing game learning here. The falling word gives a reason to find the key quickly, and the level decides which keys can come up.
Picking a level for a child or a class
There is no age rule. A child who is still learning where the letters are should start at Level 1 on Gentle, however old they are. Move up when all 25 words are cleared two runs in a row. As free typing games for kids go, this one is plain on purpose: no chat, no leaderboard, no account, and it never asks for a name. All 348 words are listed under the game, so a parent or teacher can read every one first. That makes it easy to use as typing games for elementary students: name one level and one speed, and the whole class practises the same list.
- Feel for the bumps on F and J with your index fingers before you press Start. That is home. Come back to it after every word.
- Keep your eyes on the screen. If you look down a lot, stay on Level 1 on Gentle a little longer.
- Clear the lowest word first. It lands soonest.
- Go for the right key, not the fast key. A wrong key costs time and brings your accuracy down.
- Play little and often. Touch typing needs routine practice to stay quick and accurate, so try five minutes on today's level each day.
Questions and answers
Are these typing games for kids free to use at school?
Yes. There is no account, no download and nothing to install, so it runs in the browser on a school computer. The words a child types are never sent anywhere. Best scores are kept in the browser, so on a shared computer they belong to that computer and not to one child.
Are these typing games for 3rd graders free?
Yes. All nine levels are free and none is locked. A third grader who already knows where the letters are can try Level 3 or Level 4 on Gentle. One who is still hunting for keys should begin at Level 1, where the fingers never leave the home row.
Is this one of the best free typing games?
That is for you to judge, so we will not claim it. Here is what it is: one game, nine levels, three speeds and 348 words. There is no sign-up, and it has no lessons, characters or story. For lessons in order, use our typing for kids page.
Does it work on a tablet or a phone?
Yes. Tap the game and the on-screen keyboard opens, with the words falling above it. Home row practice only makes sense on a real keyboard, though. A tablet with a keyboard attached works just like a laptop.
Where do the words come from?
Every word is in ENABLE, a public domain English word list. Anything rude or frightening was left out, along with words that British and American English spell differently, such as colour.
