How it works
A 90 BPM metronome keeps pace with a competition waltz at its fastest: the World DanceSport Federation's rules allow 28 to 30 bars a minute, and 30 bars of three beats make 90. This pad counts in four, not three.

Questions and answers
What tempo marking is 90 BPM?
Wikipedia's list of basic tempo markings puts 90 inside Andante (56 to 108) and inside Andantino and Andante moderato (both 80 to 108). The list calls its numbers rough guides for 4/4 time that change from composer to composer.
How many BPM is a waltz?
In competition, 84 to 90, by our own sum. World DanceSport Federation Rule E.3.2 (2026) counts in bars, 28 to 30 a minute, and Wikipedia's International Standard waltz article gives each bar three beats. The Viennese Waltz is listed apart, at 58 to 60.
Why is there no 90 on a mechanical metronome?
The most common wind-up scale, as Wikipedia's Metronome article lists it, climbs in fours from 76 to 120, so it reads 88 and then 92. Other arrangements exist, and this page plays 90 exactly.
Why can't I hear the metronome?
On a phone, look at the ring switch first, then the volume, then whether the sound has gone to Bluetooth headphones. The four dots keep time with no sound at all, so the bar can still be followed by eye.
