Questions and answers

Does metronome 84 count in 3/4 or 4/4?

Neither. Every click is the same and two equal dots take turns, so the pad marks no bar. Count one, two, three across the clicks for a waltz, or one, two for half notes. The 3/4 metronome on this site marks beat one.

What music is marked half note = 84?

The finale of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony. Wikipedia's article on the symphony heads its score excerpt Allegro, half note = 84, in 4/4, and German Wikipedia's table of his 1817 metronome marks agrees. Two clicks fill a bar; quarter notes would be 168, by our sum.

Is 84 BPM andante?

Yes, by Wikipedia's list of tempo markings, where Andante spans 56 to 108. Andantino and Andante moderato both begin at 80, so 84 sits just inside them too. Treat the words loosely: the list says no metronome figure can be read off a word alone.

Is 84 a number on a wind-up metronome?

Yes, as a rule. In the commonest arrangement, given in Wikipedia's Metronome article, the stretch above 72 rises four at a time, so the notches here read 76, 80, 84, 88, 92. Other arrangements exist.

Why can't I hear the metronome?

A silent phone usually means the ring switch, the volume, or Bluetooth headphones that have claimed the sound. Without it the two dots still swap on every click, so 84 can be followed by eye.
