How it works

A fast metronome has to pass 208, where mechanical ones usually stop, by Wikipedia's Metronome article. This one opens at 300 beats a minute and takes any whole tempo up to 1000.

Questions and answers

What is the fastest metronome speed?

Here, 1000 beats a minute. Type more and the field settles on 1000 and shows its limits. Each click is cut shorter as the tempo climbs so they never run together, and past 400 both dots stay lit: a faster swap would only flicker.

How fast is a 500 BPM metronome?

A click every 120 milliseconds, a little over eight a second. Others up here: 250 is 240 ms a click, 360 about 167 ms and 1000 exactly 60 ms. Each figure is 60,000 over the tempo, our own sum.

What is the fastest tempo marking?

Prestissimo, the last entry in Wikipedia's list of common tempo markings: extremely fast, 200 beats a minute and over, with no top figure. So 250, 300 and 360 all answer to it. The list calls its own numbers very rough, and meant for 4/4 time.

How do I count a metronome at 300 BPM?

In groups. Three clicks to a beat are triplets at 100 beats a minute, two are eighth notes at 150 and four are sixteenth notes at 75. Every click here sounds the same, so the grouping is yours to count. These are our own sums.

Why can't I hear the metronome?

Phones are the usual reason: a ring switch set to silent, the volume at nothing, or Bluetooth carrying the click off to a pair of headphones. The two dots on the pad go on swapping in time, sound or not.
