Beat length at 240 BPM

How it works

A 240 BPM metronome clicks every quarter of a second. Wikipedia's Tempo article counts 120 beats a minute as two beats every second, and 240 is twice that.

Questions and answers

Is 240 BPM prestissimo?

By Wikipedia's list of tempo markings, yes. Prestissimo, extremely fast, is 200 beats a minute and over, and the list sets no upper figure for it. The same list calls its numbers very rough approximations for 4/4 time that vary widely by composer.

Is there a 240 on a metronome?

Not on a mechanical one, as a rule. Wikipedia's Metronome article gives a wind-up metronome a usual range of 40 to 208, and the most common scale it lists ends on 208. This page opens on 240 all the same.

Is 240 BPM the same as eighth notes at 120?

The clicks fall at the same moments. Two clicks here fill one beat of 120, so each is an eighth note of that beat; four fill one beat of 60, a sixteenth note each. Both are our own sums.

Is 240 BPM the same as 240 BPS?

No. BPM counts the beats in a minute and BPS the beats in a second. 240 BPM is 4 BPS. 240 beats a second would be 14,400 a minute, far beyond the 1000 this metronome goes up to.

Why can't I hear the metronome?

A phone's ring switch, a volume at zero and Bluetooth headphones that have taken the sound are the usual causes. Meanwhile the two dots on the pad go on swapping, one swap to a click, with no sound needed.
