Beat length at 204 BPM

How it works

A 204 BPM metronome clicks 51 four-beat bars a minute. The World DanceSport Federation's 2026 rules set a competition quickstep at 50 to 52 bars; Wikipedia's Ballroom dance list gives the dance 4/4 time, and the multiplying is ours.

Start

Tap the pad, or press Space. 204 arrives as a quick run of equal clicks while two dots swap, and no click is marked as the first of a bar. Another tap stops it.

Change the tempo

Tap the number under the pad and type a tempo, or use minus and plus. Four presses either way reach 200 or 208, the last two notches of the most common wind-up scale in Wikipedia's Metronome article, which has no 204.

Questions and answers

Is 204 BPM a quickstep tempo?

One of them: the middle of the competition range. World DanceSport Federation Rule E.3.2 allows 50 to 52 bars a minute, which in 4/4 is 200 to 208 beats, four either side of 204. No other tempo strictly between those limits fills whole bars.

Do metronome dials say presto or prestissimo at 204?

They split. Wikipedia's tempo list ends Presto at 200, yet a French dial pictured in German Wikipedia's Tempo article prints it up to 208. The German dial reads Prestissimo; the Japanese has no word between 200 and 208. Each source calls its figures rough.

Does half of 204 BPM fit a dance too?

Yes: 102 lies inside the samba range. The same Rule E.3.2 gives the Samba 50 to 52 bars a minute, and the Ballroom dance list counts samba in 2/4. So 51 bars are 102 beats of samba or 204 of quickstep, by our sums.

How long do four beats last at 204 BPM?

1.18 s, by our division: one bar of quickstep. Within the beat a sixteenth note is over in 73.5 ms, a triplet eighth in 98 ms, an eighth in 147.1 ms and a dotted eighth in 220.6 ms.

Why can't I hear the metronome?

Look at the phone before anything else: its ring switch, its volume, and whether Bluetooth has passed the click to a speaker in another room. While the click runs the two dots trade places 204 times a minute, heard or not.
