What this police typing test has you type
Eighteen passages in four groups: traffic and vehicle reports, property reports, lost and found property, and records desk entries. Each is written after the event, as an officer or a records clerk types it up. Applying to take calls? Live call notes are on the 911 dispatcher typing test.
Where the errors hide
A time such as 1435 hours has four digits and no colon. A case number such as 26-017733 has eight digits round one hyphen, and a plate such as 7K3 R52 switches between digits and letters four times. One wrong character points to another case, so check each number before you move on.
Run Records entry: correcting a report twice: it turns on T6V against T6W and 104 against 140.
Questions and answers
What speed does a police department typing test need?
Requirements vary by department and by post, so ask the recruiter for the speed, the length of the test and how errors count. This page quotes no pass mark and gives no certificate.
Is there a police academy typing test?
That depends on the academy and on the department that sends you. These passages give practice in the shape of a typed report: a date and time, a place, what was reported and a case number.
Are the reports, names and plates real?
No. Every report, person, street and case number is invented, and no town or agency is named. The plates fit no standard-issue US format listed on Wikipedia on 7 October 2026. The three callback numbers are in 555-0100 to 555-0199, a range kept for fiction.
Why keystrokes per hour as well as WPM?
KPH counts keystrokes: correct characters a minute, multiplied by 60. Records entry: the daily log has 73 digits in 61 words, and for text like that keystrokes say more than words do.

How this list was compiled: Eighteen passages made for this page: four traffic and vehicle reports, five property reports, five lost and found property entries and four records desk entries, in the plain past tense of a report typed after the event. Every report, person, street, date, time, case number, tag number and serial number is invented. No passage describes a real incident, none names a town, a police department or any other agency, and none was copied from a hiring test or from another page of this site. The five named people are a finder, an owner or a requester; nobody is named in a report of theft or damage. Plates: the six plates are plate-shaped strings in five shapes (1A2 B34, A12 BC3, 12A B3C, A12B 3CD and 1AB C2D), each with a letter in fourth place. On 2026-10-07 each plate was tested against every serial format at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_license_plate_designs_and_serial_formats, in its two tables of standard-issue passenger plates (those now issued, and those still valid but not issued now), reading X in a format as any letter or digit; none of the plates fits any format. A personalised plate can carry nearly any string, so a match with a plate on the road cannot be ruled out and would be chance. The three phone numbers are in 555-0100 to 555-0199, the range reserved for fictional use, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/555_(North_American_Numbering_Plan), read 2026-10-07. The words, characters and digits of every passage were counted again (a character is one keystroke, spaces included). The page states no pass mark: requirements differ from one department to the next. Licence: own work
