KPH Test

Type a passage for a minute and read your keystrokes per hour, WPM and accuracy.

Type each word and press space after it. The clock starts on your first key. The budget review moves from 9:30 on 04/06 to 14:00 on 04/08, in room 3B on floor 2. Bring the first quarter figures: 418 orders, 37 returns and a refund total of $2,964.50. Dial-in code 6021 opens at 13:55. The next review is set for 07/08, and papers are due a week before, by 07/01.

How it works

This KPH test times you on the main keyboard and gives your keystrokes per hour (KPH), WPM and accuracy from one run. Six passages are letters only; six carry dates, sums and reference numbers. A self-test: no certificate.

How to test KPH

Type for 1, 3 or 5 minutes. KPH is your correct characters a minute, spaces included, multiplied by 60: 150 a minute is 9,000 KPH. A longer run gives a steadier figure, because one stumble weighs less. Compare a result only with a run of the same length on the same kind of text.

WPM and KPH from one run

A word is five characters, so 1 WPM is 300 KPH, and this is a WPM and KPH test in one. A job posting may quote either: a 10k KPH target is 10,000 keystrokes an hour, or 33.3 WPM. The converter under More options turns any other figure.

  • Run a letters passage, then one with figures: the gap between the two scores is what the top row costs.

Questions and answers

Is this KPH typing test free?

Yes. There is no sign-up and no limit on runs, and what you type stays in your browser.

What KPH do data entry jobs ask for?

Each employer sets its own figure, for letters, numbers or both. Ask the recruiter which text the test uses, how long it runs and how errors count. This page prints no pass mark: we could read none at an employer's own page.

How do I convert KPH to WPM?

Divide by 300: 12,000 KPH is 40 WPM, and 15,000 KPH is 50 WPM. That holds where a word is five keystrokes, as here. Ask whether your test counts wrong keystrokes too; this page counts correct ones only.

Is KPH typing done on letters or on the number pad?

KPH counts keystrokes on any keys. This page measures the main keyboard: letters alone, or letters with figures on the top row. For digits on the number pad, the number typing test scores in KPH too.

All 12 passages

Letters only: office prose 6

  • Email: a late delivery Short words and few capitals: keep an even beat and do not sprint.
  • Handover note: the front desk Long sentences with commas: read to the comma, type, read on.
  • Letter: thanks after an interview 8 capitals, each a Shift with the other hand.
  • Memo: quiet hours in the open office One colon, after simple: Shift and the semicolon key.
  • Notice: the stock room One semicolon, on the home row under the right little finger.
  • Welcome note to a new clerk Plain sentences, the easiest text here, so this is your ceiling.

Letters and figures: dates, sums and references 6

  • Customer account update 54 digits in 54 words: keep to the top row and do not look down.
  • Expense claim summary Every sum adds up, so a total that looks wrong on your screen is a slip.
  • Invoice reminder with a late fee Three sums with a $ sign: Shift and 4, then the digits, a comma, a point.
  • Meeting moved: times and rooms Clock times put a colon between digits, so Shift goes down and up inside one number.
  • Order confirmation with a reference The slash in a date is the key left of the right Shift; the hyphen is right of zero.
  • Receiving log: pallets and cartons Part numbers 60-2231 and 60-2238 differ in the last digit only.
