Questions and answers
Why is UK garage around 130 BPM?
130 was the sped-up version. Wikipedia's UK garage article says American garage house was popular at 120, and that playing it at 130, nearer the jungle and hardcore of British clubs, gave speed garage its name. Its usual range, it adds, is 130 to 138.
Is 130 BPM a fast tempo?
Yes, by the usual words. Wikipedia's list of tempo markings places 130 in Allegro, fast and bright (120 to 156), and in Molto allegro or Allegro vivace (124 to 156). The list presents all of its numbers as very rough approximations for 4/4 time.
Is this 130 BPM metronome in 4/4?
Yes: a higher click opens every group of four. Garage is not always that square. Wikipedia's article on it says the genre uses either 4/4 house kick patterns or 2-step, which took the second and fourth bass kick out of every bar.
Which notch is nearest 130 on a wind-up metronome?
126 or 132. The most common scale, as Wikipedia's Metronome article lists it, rises in sixes above 120 (126, 132, 138, 144), so 130 lands between two notches. Scales with other steps exist.
Why can't I hear the metronome?
Usually the phone is on silent at its ring switch, or the volume has been slid to zero, or a Bluetooth speaker has picked the click up. While you look, the four dots keep lighting through each bar in silence.
