How it works
Metronome 109 is the first whole tempo past Andante. Wikipedia's list of tempo markings stops Andante, Andantino and Andante moderato at 108, one beat lower, which leaves 109 to Moderato (108 to 120). Its figures are very rough, it says.

Start
Tap the pad, or press Space. The 109 runs as a level click, two equal dots taking turns, and marks no bar. Tap again to stop it.
Change the tempo
Tap the number under the pad and type a tempo, or use minus and plus. A wind-up metronome can only get near: the most common scale in Wikipedia's Metronome article steps in fours here, 108 then 112, so its nearest notch is one beat slow.
Questions and answers
Is 109 BPM moderato or allegretto?
Moderato, in Wikipedia's list of tempo markings: it does not open Allegretto until 112 or Allegro moderato until 116. That makes 109, 110 and 111 the only whole tempos the list gives to Moderato and to no other word.
Why does one metronome dial say allegretto at 109?
German Wikipedia's Tempo article pictures a 21st-century Japanese dial with Allegretto over 104 to 116 and calls such bands only hints; Wikipedia's English list opens the word at 112. Allegretto once meant very slightly faster than Andante, the English article notes.
What is metronome 109 in eighth notes?
With the quarter note at 109, an eighth lasts 275.2 ms and a sixteenth 137.6 ms, by our own division; this site's eighth note metronome clicks two to a beat. Read as eighth note = 109, the quarter is 54.5, not a whole tempo.
Why can't I hear the metronome?
Most often the phone is muted: look at the ring switch, then the volume, then whether Bluetooth earbuds are holding the sound. The two dots on the pad go on taking turns at 109 either way.
