Ghost Touch Test

Press Start the test, put the device down and touch nothing: any touch that arrives is not yours.

The number of touch points your device reports shows here.

Touch the screen to start.

Filled 0 squares

On a touch screen, Start opens the grid over the whole screen. Hold Done for a second to come back.

How this check works

Hands off for 30 seconds

Lay the device flat, press Start the test and take your hands away. Any touch that arrives inside the test area is one nobody made: the page draws a cross where it landed and counts it.

A square fills only where the screen reported a touch. The page shows what arrived, and it never judges the screen.

  • A square of the grid fills only when the screen reports a touch inside it.
  • A square that lies between two reports but got none of its own is marked as passed over, not filled.
  • The finger count is the most touches the browser reported at one moment, next to the number the device says it supports.

Ghost touch checks, one at a time 5

  • Grid fill unplugged, then on the charger Fill the grid with one finger while unplugged, then again on the charger, and label each run. Squares that fill away from your finger are touches you did not make. On a touch screen the grid covers the whole glass where the browser allows full screen.
  • Hands off for 2 minutes The same watch, four times as long, for touches that come seldom. Leave the device where the problem usually shows, such as flat on the desk or upright in its stand.
  • Hands off for 30 seconds Lay the device flat, press Start the test and take your hands away. Any touch that arrives inside the test area is one nobody made: the page draws a cross where it landed and counts it.
  • Hands off on the charger, 60 seconds Plug the charger in first, then start. Compare the count with an unplugged watch. The page cannot see whether the device is charging, so note which run was which.
  • One slow line along a dashed diagonal Trace one of the dashed diagonals slowly with a single finger. Every touch gets its own line, so a dot or dash that appears away from your finger is a second touch the screen reported by itself.

Ghost touch readings and what to try 11

  • A stray dot away from the line you drew The drawing check counts every touch as a stroke, so one line drawn and three strokes counted means two touches came from somewhere else. Draw the line again: strays that return to the same place mark the spot to note.
  • Crosses along one edge Take the case off, lay the device on a table and watch again. A case lip, or a palm wrapped round the side, makes real touches at the edge, and a watch on a table rules both out.
  • Crosses on a screen nobody touched Each cross is a touch the screen reported while your hands were away, drawn where it landed. Look at where the crosses sit: one spot, one edge or scattered. Each pattern has its own reading in this list.
  • Crosses piled up in one spot Touches that keep landing in the same place are the ones to note. Turn the device round and run the watch again: a spot that stays on the same piece of glass belongs to the screen, and its position is worth writing down for a repairer.
  • No touch arrived during the watch Nothing landed in the test area this time. That does not prove the fault is gone, since ghost touches can come and go. Watch again in the conditions where you saw the problem.
  • No touch screen on this device The browser reports 0 touch points, the usual answer on a computer without a touch screen. A mouse click inside the test area during a watch is drawn as a cross, which shows how a ghost touch would look.
  • The page scrolls or a link opens by itself A watch sees touches only inside the dashed test area, and a touch that lands elsewhere acts on the page instead. Scroll the test area to the part of the glass where it happened, or run the grid check.
  • Touches on wet or freshly wiped glass Dry the screen with a soft cloth, wait a minute and run the watch again. Wipe fingerprints off too: smudges from sweaty fingertips can interfere as well as drops.
  • Touches only while charging Try another charger and cable before anything else. If the watch is clean on battery every time and clean with the second charger too, the first charger is the suspect.
  • Touches that stop when the case comes off Put the case back and watch again, then do the same with the screen protector, to learn which of the two it is. Look for a lifted edge, trapped dust or moisture, then refit or replace it.
  • Touches while a glove mode is switched on A mode that raises the screen's sensitivity so it works through gloves can also produce unreliable and phantom inputs. Switch it off in the device's settings and repeat the watch.

How it works

This ghost touch test watches a screen that nobody is touching. For 30 seconds the page marks every tap that arrives by itself where it lands and counts them.

How to test ghost touch

1. Lay the device flat and press Start the test. 2. Take your hands away. The test area reads Hands off for 30 seconds. 3. Read the result: 2 touches arrived in 30 seconds with no finger down, each drawn as a cross, or No touch arrived.

Then change one thing at a time

Repeat the watch on the charger, with the case off and after drying the glass. A fault that comes and goes needs Hands off for 2 minutes. To cover the whole glass rather than the test area, run Grid fill unplugged, then on the charger.

  • Set the screen's sleep timeout longer than the watch first, so the screen stays on while your hands are away.

Questions and answers

What is ghost touch on a phone?

Touches the screen registers that nobody made: an app opens, a letter types or the page scrolls by itself.

Why does ghost touch happen while charging?

A low-quality charger with a noisy, unstable voltage can temporarily interfere with the accuracy and sensitivity of a capacitive screen. Compare Hands off on the charger, 60 seconds with an unplugged watch to see whether yours does.

Can water or a screen protector cause ghost touches?

Water can upset the sensing: some capacitive screens sense wrongly with only a little on the glass. These screens work even under a protector, so suspect one only if the watch is clean without it.

Can this ghost touch tester fix the screen?

No. It reports what the screen sends and repairs nothing. What you leave with is something to show a repairer: how many touches, where on the glass, and whether the charger, the case or a wet screen changed the count.
