Beat length at 170 BPM

How it works

A 170 BPM metronome clicks where drum and bass settled: Wikipedia's article on the genre says its tempos have mostly stayed between 170 and 180 since around 1996, and puts some recent, slower tracks at 150 to 170.

Questions and answers

Is 170 BPM presto, vivace or allegro?

Vivace or Presto. Wikipedia's Tempo list runs them 156 to 176 and 168 to 200, ends Allegro at 156 and starts Vivacissimo at 172: rough figures, by its own account. A 19th-century French dial in German Wikipedia's Tempo article prints Allegro over 152 to 180.

Does a wooden metronome have 170 beats a minute?

Usually not: the most common wind-up scale, in Wikipedia's Metronome article, goes from 168 straight to 176. German Wikipedia pictures a Japanese dial with Vivace over 152 to 176 and a German one with Presto from 168, bands it calls approximate.

What is 170 in eighth notes or in 6/8?

As eighth notes, 170 is a quarter-note beat of 85: type 85 into the eighth-note metronome. The 6/8 metronome counts dotted quarters, so 170 typed there is 510 eighth notes a minute; 170 eighth notes would need 56.7 there, not a whole tempo.

Does a competition jive reach 170 BPM?

Yes, just above its floor. The World DanceSport Federation's 2026 rules (Rule E.3.2) set the Jive at 42 to 44 bars a minute, and Wikipedia's Ballroom dance list writes it in 4/4. At 170 that is forty-two and a half bars, by our sum.

Why can't I hear the metronome?

Check the phone before the page: its ring switch, its volume, and any Bluetooth device holding the sound. With no sound at all the four dots still run the bar at 170, the first one larger.
