How this list was compiled: Words chosen one at a time for this site, not taken from any published word list or frequency list; no film-subtitle list was used and no frequency rank is given. Every word, and every twin without its mark that a note names, was checked on 2026-10-04 to have a Dutch entry in the English Wiktionary, https://en.wiktionary.org. The English meanings were written for this site and compared with those entries, and words whose main sense is rude or slang were left out. Which marks Dutch writes and what they do (the two dots that start a new syllable, as in reëel, geïnd, coördinaat and geüpload; the acute accent for stress, on both letters of a long vowel, as in één; een and één, voorkómen and vóórkomen; the grave accent in French loanwords and in hè; the circumflex in enquête and fêteren; the cedilla before a, o or u; Eén, not Één, at the start of a sentence, with accents on capitals only in all capitals such as ÉÉN and in loanwords; IJ written with two capitals, as in IJmuiden): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_orthography. The rule that a word starting with IJ takes both capitals is stated in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IJ_(digraph). The keyboards (the US-International layout as the usual one in the Netherlands, and the older Dutch layout, which is seldom used): the Dutch sections of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_QWERTY_keyboard_language_variants and the United States-International and Dutch keyboard charts of the Unicode CLDR project, release 43, https://github.com/unicode-org/cldr/tree/release-43/keyboards. Option key presses and the letters a phone offers on touch and hold: the U.S. and English on-screen keyboard charts of the same CLDR release. Alt codes are each character's number in the Western European code page with a zero in front, as https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alt_code describes, worked out for this site. All read 2026-10-04. The 36 sentences come from the Tatoeba corpus, https://tatoeba.org, found 2026-10-03 with its search set to Dutch sentences owned by a self-declared native speaker, with a direct English translation, and each was compared with its Tatoeba record again on 2026-10-04. Each is credited with its Tatoeba number and author and opens at https://tatoeba.org/en/sentences/show/ followed by the number. The English line with each sentence is the linked Tatoeba translation. No sentence was written for this site. Every word and sentence was read against a blocklist of rude and upsetting words. A word that fits several drills is printed once in this list, under the first heading that fits it; the drill in the menu still includes it. Licence: own work (selection, grouping, glosses and notes; words checked against Wiktionary, https://en.wiktionary.org, CC BY-SA). The items in the sentences group are from Tatoeba, https://tatoeba.org, under CC BY 2.0 FR, https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/fr/, each credited to its author by user name. The English line with each sentence is a Tatoeba translation under the same license, and its author is named on the linked sentence page.
How it works
This is a typing speed test Dutch learners can take in a minute: each run ends with WPM and accuracy. The marks count, so ë, é and both capitals of IJ must be typed as shown.
Read the full guide
Nine drills, from two dots to ij
The Practise menu, under More options, opens on Everything: 431 words and sentences, shuffled. One drill takes the nine marked letters, each in a letter pair from a real word. Another takes the two dots alone, from België to geïnteresseerd. The ij drill has five words that start with two capitals, such as IJsland, and 36 Tatoeba sentences mix it all.
The keyboard the Netherlands uses
Most Dutch keyboards are plain US ones set to the US-International layout; a Dutch layout exists but is seldom used. Dutch writes the stress on a long vowel twice, as in één, but starts a sentence with Eén, not Één.
IJ takes two capitals: type both, as in IJsland. Ijsland is a miss here.
On US-International, " and ' are dead keys: nothing shows until you press the letter. Keep typing.
Questions and answers
How do I type ë and é on a US keyboard?
On the US-International layout, " then e gives ë and ' then e gives é. On a Mac, Option + u then e gives ë. On Windows, hold Alt and type 0235 for ë or 0233 for é on the number pad.
Is ij one letter in Dutch?
For capitals, yes: a word that starts with ij takes two capitals, as in IJsland and IJssel. On a keyboard it is two keys, i then j. The names Bulgarije and Algerije end in ije, while België ends in ië.
Is it een or één?
Both exist: één is the number one and een is a or an. The accents go on both letters. At the start of a sentence Dutch writes Eén, with no accent on the capital. This page counts a missing accent as a miss.
