How it works
This 15 second typing test gives you short everyday words to type, three to five letters each, and turns your count into words per minute. Fifteen seconds is a quarter of a minute, so the page multiplies by four.

Typing test 15 seconds: the sum behind your WPM
The page counts your correct characters, divides by five and multiplies by four. A correct word earns its letters plus one for the space, so lamp is five characters: one standard word. 25 correct characters is 20 WPM, 50 is 40, 75 is 60 and 100 is 80.
Questions and answers
How many words can you type in 15 seconds?
A quarter of your words per minute: ten standard words at 40 WPM, fifteen at 60 and twenty at 80. A standard word is five characters, spaces included, and the words here come to almost exactly that on average.
Is a 15 second typing test accurate?
For a burst, yes; for a steady speed, less so. One missed four-letter word costs up to five characters, which is 4 WPM off a fifteen second score and 1 WPM off a full minute. Compare it only with other fifteen second runs.
What do I type in the test?
Short everyday words in lower case, such as lamp, tent and maple, picked at random from the 244 listed under the test. There are no capitals, no punctuation and no word over five letters.
What happens to a word I have not finished when time runs out?
Its correct letters still count. The run stops at fifteen seconds exactly, and the letters you had right in the last word are added to your score, without the one for the space.
